WG 9: European Union

The Role of the EU in Climate Change and International Security

What does a warmer world mean for European security? This working group will focus on identifying responses to climate security risks for Europe: on the continent, in the neighbourhood and further afield. This working group will ask: How can the EU best equip its institutions to manage climate risks? What are the limitations to how the EU and its member states use their diplomacy, development, crisis management and conflict prevention tools? How can the EU’s new Global Strategy move from rhetoric to reality, to build the climate resilience of states and societies to its east and south?

Objectives

  • Highlight risks and opportunities for Europe in a climate changed world

  • Identify priorities for action

  • Help European institutions moving from strategy to implementation
