Climate Security Practice Spotlight - The Lake Chad Regional Stabilisation Strategy

The fraught humanitarian situation in the lake Chad basin is a complex problem with undervelopment, violent conflict and environmental crisis all playing a role. Climate change is a factor in creating livelihood stress which contributes to violent extremism. In a strategy to address the situation the Lake Chad Basin Commission and the African Union implement a number of climate security practices to build community resilience and foster peace.

The virtual gathering of over 40 world leaders and climate change stakeholders saw greater attention paid to the nexus of climate and security. Whilst limited multilateral solutions were espoused, the summit showed how the topic is slowly but surely becoming more mainstreamed in international relations.
