International Alert and the Netherlands Embassy in Mali hosted a preparatory workshop on climate change & security in Mali on 23 and 24 October 2017 in Bamako aiming at bringing stakeholders from the climate change, natural resource management, security and development sector together to discuss and analyze the compound risks of the climate change – natural resource – security nexus in Mali.
Despite active discussion within the scientific community, and rising media interest, climate geoengineering remains largely absent from political and public debates. In this recent article in Science Magazine, Carnegie Climate Geoengineering Governance Initiative (C2G2) called upon policy-makers to become more actively involved. Given the low levels of knowledge and high levels of misperceptions surrounding geoengineering, the piece also offers a useful overview of the issue, and addresses some commonly asked questions.
In order to prepare for the upcoming Planetary Security Conference, senior policy makers and distinguished experts are meeting in a sub-regional policy dialogue for the Levant. They share best practices on an integrated approach to the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus with the objective to identify areas for action in this field.
On November 22nd The European Parliament's Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Security and Defence will host a public hearing on the implications of climate change for EU common Security and Defence Policy. During the meeting various experts will discuss trends and developments in climate-security and European responses.

Workshop on Climate Journalism

Clingendael, in collaboration with Free Press Unlimited, is hosting a journalists training on Climate Security for the Planetary Security Conference. Journalists from Iraq, Mali, Ethiopia, Nepal and Sudan have been invited to attend this conference, as the people living in these regions are frequently confronted with the effects of climate change.
The Working Group on Climate, Nuclear, and Security Affairs, chaired by the Center for Climate and Security, has articulated a first-of-its kind framework for understanding and addressing the complex connections between climate change, security, and nuclear issues.
