About Gatkuoth Kai

A Development and Humanitarian Specialist with over 17 years of progressive experience in leading several development initiatives and life-saving humanitarian interventions.

He holds MSc in Risk, Crisis and Disaster Management from University of Leicester, United Kingdom. He holds also MSc in Project Management.

At the moment, he heads Disaster Risk Reduction unit at African Union Commission, a role he is passionately contributing to development and strengthening of institutions and systems of governance for disaster risk management at continental, regional and national levels.

Prior to joining the AU Commission, he was Programme Manager for Peacebuilding cross-border programme targeting and building resilience among borderline communities in South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda border regions. The programme led to increased trust, enhanced mutual relations and greater economic interdependency and resilience between the borderline communities in the three Countries.

In his earliest career journey, Kai had implemented complex humanitarian emergencies programmes in community resilience, health, education, nutrition and Livelihood. Those interventions saved lives of victims of either natural disasters or the protracted and catastrophic civil wars in the Sudan.
