Powering Peace is a joint research initiative of the Stimson Center and Energy Peace Partners. The initiative envisions a broad policy shift within the United Nations and among its member states to adopt renewable energy in peace operations. This report examines how UN peace operations can implement their respective mandates with more diversified energy sources. The launch event will present the latest evidence from the field on how to make UN peace operations more sustainable.

Endowment agricultural projects to combat desertification & contribute to stability in Iraq

The past 30 years have seen a rapid decline in the agricultural output of Iraq, amidst devastating foreign invasions and civil conflicts. Now, local communities are demonstrating resilience amongst the violence and desertification to help try and save Iraq's breadbasket. Fadak Farms is a major greening initiative aims to provide stability through supporting local economy.
India has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2021-22. Previously, the country has adopted a cautionary approach towards climate security. While it may not significantly shift its positions, global realities may trigger more openness, with an eye on multilateralism, rule of law and fairness.
Desertification in Basra Governorate is classified as "very severeā€. At this level, the land becomes barren and arid. Many abandoned their lands to settle in the city. As a result, the number of unemployed in Basra has increased. Desertification is one of the main factors hindering social and economic development and exacerbating economic difficulties, which, in turn, worsen the security situation.
Extreme weather events are expected to become more severe under future climate conditions making them a source of concern for policymakers in national and international security. The lack of proper disaster preparedness could lead to conflict. But the timely provision of important climate data to decision-makers could play a key role in averting these conflicts.
