Powering Peace is a joint research initiative of the Stimson Center and Energy Peace Partners. The initiative envisions a broad policy shift within the United Nations and among its member states to adopt renewable energy in peace operations. This report examines how UN peace operations can implement their respective mandates with more diversified energy sources. The launch event will present the latest evidence from the field on how to make UN peace operations more sustainable.

Desertification in Basra Governorate is classified as "very severe”. At this level, the land becomes barren and arid. Many abandoned their lands to settle in the city. As a result, the number of unemployed in Basra has increased. Desertification is one of the main factors hindering social and economic development and exacerbating economic difficulties, which, in turn, worsen the security situation.

Extreme weather events are expected to become more severe under future climate conditions making them a source of concern for policymakers in national and international security. The lack of proper disaster preparedness could lead to conflict. But the timely provision of important climate data to decision-makers could play a key role in averting these conflicts.
